The castle of Terre Neuve

THE CHÂTEAU DE TERRE-NEUVE was built around 1590, for Nicolas RAPIN, High Provost of the Constables of France and companion to Henry the iv. This jewel of the French Renaissance has received many illustrious persons, such as the Duke of Sully and Agrippa d’Aubigne. During the 19th century, the Chateau of Terre-Neuve was owned by the Marquis Octave de Rochebrune, celebrated for his etchings. He produced 492 etchings at Terre-Neuve and was considered by some to be the ‘Piranesi’ of his time.

Simenon a writer in Terre Neuve autobiographical “PEDIGREE”. You can still see the beautiful desk of the 18th century where he worked on. His friend, the painter Maurice de VLAMINCK came often to visit him in Terre Neuve. It is in the forest of Vouvant, then at the castle of Terre Neuve in Fontenay le Comte, “Saint Mesmin le vieux” and the Hotel des Roches Noires in les Sables D’olonne that  the writer asserts his art and reputation of being a great French literature novelist . During this period, he wrote some of his major works: «The truth about baby Donge», «aîné des Ferchaux “… No doubt are the complex links of a writer with its places of stays even if not always apparent.It is however in les Sables D’olonne, that the action ‘son Campo”in 1942 and”Holiday of Maigret”in 1948 takes place.
